A Brooklyn man whose name was cleared after serving 21 years in prison now wants to help make sure DNA evidence mistakes don?t happen again.
Scott Fappiano was released from prison Friday after DNA evidence cleared him of the 1985 rape of a police officer?s wife. Fappiano will testify Tuesday before the state Assembly Committee of Codes. The committee is holding a hearing on the storage and accessibility of DNA crime scene evidence. According to Fappiano and a group called the Innocence Project, the NYPD couldn?t find the DNA testing evidence from his case. A private lab that stored the evidence from his case was able to free him from prison.
The Independence Project argues policies and procedures for preserving and retrieving criminal evidence in New York need to be updated. Fappiano adds that no more innocent people should have to sit in prison due to mistakes.
