Many Brooklyn high school seniors are preparing to head off to college, which can leave parents suffering with empty nest syndrome.
Experienced empty nester Linda Sheppard says when her two children left for college it triggered a depression. Psychologist Rose Bryant-Tuckett says dedicated mothers who participate in activities like the PTA and after-school programs are most susceptible. "Many people forget who they were and forget their own personalities," Bryant-Tuckett said of the adjustment.
Doctors say unlike other sudden losses in life, parents can prepare for empty nest syndrome. Some tips include not calling children every day and spending more time with partners or spouses. Experts advise parents not to share their pain with their children because it may make kids feel guilty.
Bryant-Tuckett says it's time to seek professional help if the empty nest blues last more than a month.
