? Brooklyn port workers rallied at City Hall Sunday to save their jobs, which are threatened by the city?s Economic Development Corporation (EDC).
Workers planned the rally after the EDC?s chief official said the agency was willing to lose cocoa shipments, which port workers unload, for condos and waterfront development. The official also said that the people who will lose their jobs as a result of this restructuring are the ?lowest rung of worker.? Port workers took offense, saying they are decent people who earn an honest wage. The EDC counters that the planned revitalization for Brooklyn?s waterfront will attract higher paying jobs, which many current port workers will be eligible for.
A lawmaker plans to have the City Council review the EDC?s practices before renewing the agency?s contract.
