Brooklyn residents are being advised to look out for a new identity fraud scheme that uses claims of missed jury duty to gain important personal information .
FBI officials say scammers are posing as court officers in a ploy to get personal details from victims. By telling potential victims they?ve missed their jury duty obligations and face prosecution, they attempt to get personal information such as Social Security numbers and birth dates.
Scammers are becoming savvier by using new technology to fool caller ID systems, according to the FBI. Authorities say real court officers will never ask for personal information, and a request for any personal details should be a warning sign of potential fraud.
No reports have been made to the Department of Consumer Affairs yet.
