More than 100 Brooklyn walkers hit the streets to spread awareness about domestic violence Saturday in anticipation of Mother?s Day.
According to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, more black women in Brooklyn are killed by intimate partners than in any other borough.
Organizers and marchers say their focus is to educate others about speaking out. They urge victims and witnesses to not be ashamed or embarrassed to report domestic violence.
Marcher Juanita Joyner said women often speak up about domestic violence too late, for instance only after someone they know has died from abuse.
Organizers had a black hearse parked nearby with a message on it that read ?Stop domestic violence before it ends this way.? They say it serves as a reminder of the consequences of domestic violence.
