New Hope Academy Charter School in East Flatbush is introducing a new way to make lessons more interactive for students.
The elementary school is using chickens to teach groups of fifth-graders the fundamentals of science, engineering and math.
Principal Tamika Stewart said she wanted a program that engaged students in science and technology as well as teaching research skills.
In addition to learning the biology of the animal, the process also includes constructing new coops for the chickens.
Parents of the students say the use of chickens is a unique experience that is not always accessible to everyday students.
