The arrest of a Crown Heights girl who allegedly threw her newborn from a window has experts reminding parents about a law that is meant to protect unwanted children.
New York's Safe Haven Law allows anyone, whether or not they are the parent, to drop off newborns at public places. Some of those places include staffed firehouses, hospitals and churches. The baby must be dropped off within five days of the birth, and no questions are asked.
Authorities have charged a 14-year-old with murder after her dead baby was found in a courtyard near her building. A medical report revealed the baby boy suffered multiple blunt injuries to the head and torso. Police were alerted after the teen went to the hospital Saturday complaining about abdominal pains.
