Most people expect to receive a greeting card, jewelry or a new gadget on their birthday, but for one Sheepshead Bay woman, the best present is a clean beach.
Victoria Gershick decided to celebrate her 31st birthday by inviting her friends to come out despite the rain and clean up Plum Beach, a place where she jogs every day.
Linnea Butterfield says this is not how she is used to spending her Saturdays, but she wasn't surprised when Gershick, her friend of 13 years, told her she wanted the cleanup to be her present.
"When it's your birthday, you want to take care of things that are closest to you," Butterfield says.
Gershick says using her special day to give back to the environment may become a birthday tradition, and she hopes others will follow her example.
