A group of distinguished authors, poets and teachers gathered in Brooklyn for the National Black Writers Conference at Medgar Evers College.
The theme of this year's conference is "Writing Race and Embracing Difference."
Honorary chair of the event Dr. Brenda Greene said that embracing difference is a necessary conversation to have, especially in today's political climate.
"What writers do is that they remind us that difference is something we move through every day," said Greene. "That we walk through detail, that we live through detail and that's actually what makes us human beings - that's what connects us."
The conference wraps up on Sunday with more workshops, panels and a closing conversation.
