Blast from the past: West Babylon students open time capsule from 1995
Treasures that they discovered included an old phone, a beeper, a year book and some gum.

West Babylon Junior High School students and staff traveled back in time 30 years on Thursday.
They did so by opening a time capsule that was buried in 1995 by the school's former students and staff, including previous Principal Michael Rizzo, a former Marine and Purple Heart recipient. Treasures that they discovered included an old phone, a beeper, a year book and some gum.
After they opened the time capsule, students participated in a walk around the gymnasium to explore the items further. They plan to soon bury their own capsule and commemorate it with a new plaque.
"We want for them to think about what is it that they want to be known for," Principal Carlos Falcon said, "and what is it that individuals in the past have been known for, which ultimately has created the current educational environment that they're in."
The goal is for future students to open the new capsule in 2050.
