Five boxers from the Bronx left the Golden Gloves finals at Madison Square Garden as champions. Ronney Vargas and Julion Ramphal both won in their finals matches on day one. The win marks Vargas? third-straight Golden Gloves championship. It was Ramphal?s first. Three more boxers from the Bronx won on day two. Christian Concepcion, a student at Bronx Community College, also won his third-straight championship after defeating Juan Roman in the 119-Pound Open Division finals by unanimous decision. In the 112-Pound Novice Division, Jamie Stuart won his first title by unanimous decision after wearing down the taller Eddie Barrizonte. Narale Pacheco, a Roosevelt High School senior who made it to the finals last year, took home her first title after overpowering Kathryn Hutchins in the 176-Pound Women?s Division. Two other fighters from the Bronx, Steven Martinez and Matthew Apolinaris, made the finals in their respective divisions but came home empty-handed.
