Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz marked a landmark law Thursday by honoring local businesses that hire disabled people.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act 17 years ago to ensure disabled people would have the same access to a high quality of life as other Americans.

Markowitz marked the anniversary by acknowledging 16 Brooklyn businesses that hire the disabled. Officials say nominations came pouring in from all over the borough.

Some of the businesses include the Brooklyn Brewery, the Brooklyn Heights branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, Key Food on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, Ari Friedman Associates and Rainbow Shops.
