The Boy Scouts of America will celebrate 100 years of Camp Wauwepex/Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River on Saturday.
Camp Wauwepex, originally located in Miller Place, was leased to the Nassau County Council in 1921 for $1 a year by William K. Vanderbilt and Henry Payne Whitney, two of the wealthiest residents on Long Island's Gold Coast. It was relocated a year later in 1922 to Wading River.
The council bought the current camp property for $300 an acre in 1926. It was renamed the Schiff Scout Reservation because of a 1979 gift from the Schiff family, which included a 7,100- square-foot dining hall.
"We are proud to celebrate the rich history of Schiff Scout Reservation and scouting on Long Island and look forward to welcoming alumni and friends as we share fond memories of our beloved camp," says scout executive and chief executive of the Theodore Roosevelt Council, Chris Coscia.
Over 1,000 scouts, volunteers, parents and alumni are expected to attend and take part in activities like camp tours and viewing historical memorabilia at the centennial celebration.
A special opening presentation, "A Salute to the Legacy of Wauwepex" will honor individuals and groups who have made contributions to support the camp property and highlight its history.
Advance registration is required to attend and costs $25 for adults. That includes tours, lunch and a commemorative patch.
