Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is calling on the NYPD to consider new technology to deal with emotionally disturbed people without resorting to potentially lethal force.
A BolaWrap is a nonlethal device that ties up people as a way to de-escalate a tense situation.
Citing the NYPD's own numbers released last year, Adams says officers responded to nearly 150,000 calls involving a person in mental crisis.
He says the BolaWrap is being assessed in police departments nationwide, including in New York. He wants the NYPD to start a pilot program with the tool. The NYPD commissioner says it's a possibility.
