Members of the Reggae-Samba drum band Fogo Azul were at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Sunday where park goers were treated to a free performance.
The group consists of 150 women, transgender and non-binary musicians who say the music is a great way to build community. The band also offers a chance for women to be a part of drumming, a traditionally male space.
"There is just something really incredible about putting on a big, huge drum around your waist and to be playing like today with 40 other people, and you can join with zero experience. I had none when I joined, and for the past three years, it's been an incredibly powerful thing," said group member Mary Taylor.
The pop-up performance also gave onlookers a chance to try out the drums. The group led a drumming workshop for those who wanted to learn the musical skill.
The event was just one of the many concert series events as part of the park's summer series.
