Incumbent Diane Gordon (D-East New York) is the Democratic winner of the 40th Congressional District primary race.
Despite facing bribery charges, Gordon gained 3,594 votes, or 57 percent on Tuesday. Kenneth Evans came in second with 25 percent and Winchester Key won 18 percent of the votes. Many Democrats told News 12 Brooklyn they believe Gordon won because she was the most well-known out of the three candidates. Others said they do not believe she is guilty of any criminal wrongdoing.
The Brooklyn District Attorney?s office indicted Gordon on bribery charges after she sought re-election. Gordon was caught on tape allegedly offering a plot of land designated for low-income housing to a developer in exchange for a free house in Queens.
Before Gordon can retake her Assembly seat, she has to run against Republican candidate Godfrey Jelks in the November general election.
