A small footbridge across a Sheepshead Bay canal is raising legal concerns over fishing in the area.

Currently, fishermen use the narrow footbridge across the canal, despite signs that say "no fishing."

Some passersby say they are afraid of walking on the bridge because they might get caught by a fishing line.

Assemblyman Steve Cimbrowitz says he sent a letter to the Department of Environmental Conservation asking the agency to clarify whether fishing is legal on the bridge. While the city does not allow fishing at the location, the DEC has the footbridge listed in its saltwater fishing access guide.

News 12 reached out to the DEC and a spokesperson said, "While the DEC is the state agency that oversees the natural resources of the state and regulates fishing in New York, legal fishing locations and fishing access are determined by the owners of the land and/or water body, whether it be a municipality or an individual, and in this case, the City of New York does not allow fishing at this location."

The DEC also said it is in the process of removing the location from its fishing guide.
