A Bronx auto repair and towing company wants to make sure that New Yorkers celebrating New Year's Eve are getting home safe.
Workers at Five-J’s Automotive on Zerega Avenue see severe damage to cars from intoxicated wrecks, often with dire consequences at hand.
“We have two of these vehicles that have been involved in drunk driving. I can’t even explain to you… the incidents we have had because of drunken driving,” said Eddy Vasquez, manager of Five-J's Automotive.
The auto shop will be providing free towing service to revelers beginning at midnight on New Year’s Day until 6 a.m.
It’s a community service the auto shop has provided on the holiday for the past two decades, and Five-J’s says it has over one dozen trucks ready to roll out as the clock turns to 2023.
“We want to eliminate drinking and driving throughout the night if we can help with that,” said Vasquez.
According to AAA, on average a death occurs every 52 minutes in the U.S. by drunk driving. The agency says people should always appoint a designated driver before heading to any celebration and plan ahead of time for alternate transportation options.
