A Bronx college student is in need of a stem cell transplant.

Emil Temple, 20, is a junior at the University of Albany studying communications with a minor in business.

His goal is to work for Nike, but in fall 2020 he was diagnosed with aplastic anemia.

Temple says he's struggling to find a full match for a transplant.

“The reason why I can’t find a match is because, you know, the registry is underrepresented when it comes to diverse communities,” Temple says. “Especially, you know, when someone like myself, who is Hispanic, make up only 10% of 22 million people registered.”

He needs blood transfusions every week, and says the New York Blood Center is doing blood drives in his honor.

Temple says he hopes to not only help himself, but get others help by having people register to donate blood.

“I would like to add more people to the ‘Be the Match’ registry,” Temple says. “Because if I can’t get a match, hopefully these donors can join and help someone else.”
