Construction is moving along on the Orchard Beach migrant relief center, and some Bronx residents set up right across from the site to make their concerns on it heard.
The relief center has faced controversy since the city announced it was going up at Orchard Beach. A group of people who are against the relief center say they plan to file a lawsuit to try to stop construction.
Members of the community, including some religious leaders and several Republican candidates for office, spoke out against the relief center. Many of them are upset because they say the city did not get input from the community before construction started.
Some of them oppose the asylum seekers coming to New York at all. Others say they empathize with migrants but don’t think Orchard Beach was the right place because of its vulnerability to flooding and distance from basic necessities such as drug stores and grocery stores.
They also say they’re concerned that this facility will impact access to the beach and park for residents.
The mayor has previously said that this center will not be a long-term solution and that the tents will be temperature-controlled as temperatures drop. According to the city, the facility will house and process single adults only for up to four days.
