A Bronx family held a candlelight vigil on Tuesday for Michael Hernandez Jr, a 27-year-old man who was fatally stabbed last week in Brooklyn.
“I’m not OK because you took him from me!” screamed Marisol Miranda, the victim’s tearful mother. “He died of the hands of these teenagers, and they need to do better! I want justice! I want my mouth to be heard everywhere.”
Police said Hernandez was stabbed several times in the abdomen around 9 p.m. on Friday near Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn.
Investigators told News 12 a large group gathered outside the Atlantic Terminal Mall before the stabbing, and multiple people ran from the scene.
Sources said police are searching for six to eight men, but they have not released details about them.
“I was told my kid was beaten,” Miranda said. “After he was beaten, they followed him to stab him to kill him.”
Miranda said her son lived in a shelter near Barclays Center and struggled with mental health and addiction.
The family said Hernandez was seeking help, and he will be remembered as funny, loving and kind.
“That was my brother, my heart, my world, my mother’s world, all our world,” said Amber Hernandez, the victim’s sister.
Loved ones released balloons, while still holding onto their fight for closure.
“Whoever you are, you took him from us,” said Alvaro Hernandez, the victim’s uncle. “You did this. You took a family member from our family that didn’t deserve this.”
“I want justice,” Miranda said. “I want them to turn themselves in.”
Police said no arrests had been made As of Tuesday night.
