The NYC Administration for Children’s Services joined forces with the FDNY and the Mott Haven Community Partnership to host a kid's celebration for National Coloring Book Day.
The celebration was filled with coloring books, a bounce house, rock climbing and more block party festivities.
But while the fun was happening, an important lesson about the safety of space heaters was also shared.
“Space heaters have been a big problem for us over the winter months for the past few years,” said FDNY Captain Michael Kozo. “You want to use and turn it on and warm up the room when you are still awake, once you go to sleep you should turn off and unplug the space heater right."
Jacqueline Perez, who came with her family, says the celebration was fun but that she also took away a lot of valuable information.
"I learned like where to see where to touch using my hands, where to find if it is dark or like where to go in case of an emergency,” said Perez.
