Bronx native in mix for high court
A Bronx native is meriting consideration for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sonia Sotomayor has been mentioned as a potential replacement for outgoing Justice David Souter. If appointed, Sotomayor would become the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice.
"She grew up in the Bronx, she's a Bronx girl," says Jenny Rivera, a professor at the CUNY School of Law.
Rivera, who used to clerk for Sotomayor, says the Supreme Court hopeful is very demanding and has high expectations for herself and those around her.
"But she's [also] caring, she's funny," Rivera says.
Sotomayor grew up in the Bronxdale Houses and attended Cardinal Spellman High School. Residents of the Bronxdale Houses say Sotomayor is an inspiration and hope she can add Supreme Court justice to her impressive resume.
The suspense over Sotomayor's potential appointment will last a while longer after the White House announced Tuesday that there would be no decision this week.
