The newly appointed New York Secretary of State was sworn in Friday and became the first Latina to serve. Bronx native, Lorraine Cortes-Vasquez, was issued her oath of office by Governor Elliot Spitzer (D-NY) at Hostos Community College. Vasquez says the borough was a fitting place for the ceremony, saying, ?I?m from the Bronx, Bronx leadership has really helped me develop who I am.? Vasquez was the vice president of government and public affairs at Cablevision. She also served as president of the Hispanic Federation, chief of staff for a New York Assemblyman and worked for the New York Department of Aging. Spitzer says Vasquez?s long career in community development and public service made her a superbly qualified candidate. Vasquez says she will divide her time between New York City and Albany and is excited about her new responsibilities.
