A Mott Haven apartment complex that houses hundreds of senior citizens is reportedly in danger of losing its power for failure to pay $70,000 in electric bills.
Con Edison is allegedly threatening to shut off the power to the common areas of the Judge Gilbert Ramirez Apartments on 138th Street. The potentially affected areas include hallways, stairwells and elevators.
The building is one of two senior citizen developments sponsored by the South Bronx Community Corporation, a nonprofit founded by Assemblywoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo. The building is reportedly in extreme financial trouble and owes another city agency hundreds of thousands of dollars.
As tenants wait to see how the situation is resolved, some say they'd be terrified to leave their apartments if power to the remainder of the building is cut off.
