The MTA is celebrating accessibility improvements to a subway station in the Bronx.
The MTA says three new elevators and two new stairway entrances have been completed ahead of schedule at the 170th Street station on Jerome Avenue.
There are now elevators that bring riders up above the avenue. Statistics show that even though the Bronx is the smallest borough, it is home to a fifth of people that live in the city with disabilities. Officials say there were some challenges as the subway station is 106 years old, but they were able to complete the work
In the future, the MTA plans to make all New York City subway stations compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In addition, the MTA announced that many of the services that had been suspended because of a staffing shortage due to the Omicron variant are now running back on schedule.
