Breast cancer patients and staff at Brookdale Hospital got a well-deserved dose of self-care Monday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The hospital's cafeteria turned into a day spa for its annual Breast Cancer Survivor Glam Day for patients and staff. The spa offered massages and facials.
“We take it very seriously that patients trust us in one of the most vulnerable times in their lives, and so it's great for us to have an opportunity to be able to give back to them and show them that we appreciate them and that we welcome them with open arms,” says Simone Mays, a breast surgical oncology specialist.
Survivors also got to take home awards and special gifts, including post-mastectomy bras and new wigs to make them feel good inside and out.
Cancer survivor Angela Manoley Defreitas says these gifts help boost the confidence of patients.
“Most women have breasts to make them feel comfortable and to make them feel like women. Once the breasts come off, most of them feel depressed and upset….once they have this and we put them in then it's like having your own again,” she says.
