A Brooklyn teenager who was shot in the head two weeks ago was released from the hospital Friday.
Kyla Sobers on Friday celebrated her 16th birthday as a survivor. Exactly two weeks ago, Sobers was at a park in Boreum Hill when she was hit by a stray bullet.
"At the scene, she was likely to die. We thought that she would not survive," says NYPD Assistant Chief Judith Harrison. "As a mother, as a grandmother, my heart broke."
After learning Sobers would be released, Harrison called on her officers to be there by her side.
"The police are part of the community, and the community needs to see us as an extension of them," says Harrison.
When Sobers exited the hospital, she was greeted with clapping and cheers.
Sobers doesn't get to go home just yet - her family tells News 12 she's headed to rehab to continue treatment and has a long road to recovery ahead of her.
Police are still searching for whoever pulled the trigger.
