The mayor is urging shoppers to stay in Brooklyn to get their back-to-school items since city and state tax no longer apply to clothing and shoes under $110.
Mayor Bloomberg says shopping at local businesses helps the city's economy. Some Brooklyn parents say they are happy to save money on clothing for their kids, especially since that first day of school outfit is so important. The city eliminated its portion of the sales tax in 2005 and this year, the state did the same.
Fifty retailers citywide will be donating money from purchases this week to public schools. To find out which businesses in Brooklyn are participating call 311.
