Brooklyn Catholics marked Ash Wednesday today at churches across the borough.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, which is the 40 days prior to Easter.
At the Basilica of St. James in Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Diocese Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio spread ashes upon the foreheads of parishioners.
Many Catholics who attended the Mass say they are planning on giving up sweets and meat for Lent this year.
