A cook from the borough is putting his own twist on a popular Puerto Rican Christmas dish.
Mauricio Pereira, of Moe's Flavors, started creating cupcakes and coffee creamer from coquito with the help of his wife and daughter.
The recipe is a family secret passed down from his grandfather.
Pereira entered coquito-making contests but says he was looking for a way to make a dish that was unique, which is when he started making cupcakes.
“I use my coquito in the cake and I came up with an icing to tie it all together and it became a huge, huge hit,” says Pereira.
Pereira currently only makes the specialty food items during the holiday season, but says he would like to keep it going year-round.
