The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office says this summer was the safest on record for crime in the borough.
The office says there were 13 shooting homicides between June and August - 24% fewer than last summer. There were 84 shootings overall, an 11% drop.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez attributes the lower numbers in part to his office’s crackdown on gang violence, which accounts for 60 to 70% of shootings in the county.
"We really try to focus on enforcement actions on a very small percentage of people,” he said. “Less than half of 1% percent are the people committing gun violence.”
The number of shooting victims did go up over the summer to 104, marking three more than last summer.
Gonzalez says his office will focus efforts on juvenile offenders and gun violence intervention programs for the fall.
