While Brooklyn is seeing more job growth than the other boroughs in these turbulent economic times, one industry in particular is thriving.
The ranks of self-employed creative workers in Brooklyn - freelancers, artists and designers - have grown 23 percent. In the past six years, Brooklyn has experienced a 33.2 percent increase in creative entrepreneurs. In Manhattan, the growth was just 6.5 percent.
The industry has become so popular in Brooklyn that a playwright opened a space for freelancers in Park Slope that is booming.
"People need space in the city - it's tough to be able to think and work at home," says Scott Adkins, of the Brooklyn Writer's Space.
