Out goes the paper and pen, in comes computer technology for patient records in a Brooklyn health care facility. The BMS Family Health Center in Brownsville switched from paper to electronic records three weeks ago. Instead of picking up paper in the form of a chart before walking in to the exam rooms, doctors can access all patient information on a computer. Pediatric Doctor Claude Offord says the new system simplifies procedures and allows doctors to spend more time with their patients. Some patients have raised privacy concerns about the advancements. The center assures patients that every precaution has been taken to ensure electronic records are only available to people on a need-to-know basis. They say backup copies have also been made and paper files will be stored in the office in the case they are needed.
