Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez held an event for people to dispose of their unwanted prescriptions Friday ahead of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The initiative doesn't just focus on helping people get rid of those prescriptions, but also to educate on the dangers of just leaving drugs lying around. That includes overdoses, which the National Institute of Health reports over 106,000 people died from in 2021.
These kinds of drugs are easily accessible if you keep them in your medicine cabinet or anywhere in your home, and it might be safe to say you don't want them falling into the wrong hands.
Officials say anyone wanting to get rid of medicine at home, the safest method is to mix it in a substance like coffee or kitty litter before placing it inside a sealable bag.
