Brooklyn launches patrol to protect seniors from scams
Borough President Eric Adams and the Brooklyn-wide Interagency Council on Aging are launching a patrol to combat Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
State officials say Brooklyn residents in Kings County lose more than $600 million annually to Medicare and Medicaid schemes – more than any other county in the state.
Adams told News 12 that the patrol will spread the word at houses of worship and will interact with seniors to give them “simple steps how to identify fraud.”
Experts say to never give out personal information, such as bank account or Social Security numbers, to anyone calling you.
They also warn seniors not to purchase items from unsecure websites or transmit any personal information to sites with deals “too good to be true.”
Anyone that believes they might be a victim of a scam can call 1-800-MEDICARE.
