A 23-year-old Brooklyn man drowned on the shores of a Long Island beach.
Long Beach police say they received calls at around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday of two swimmers in distress.
One man was rescued by an off-duty lifeguard. The man told responders that his friend, Kashawn Carlos, was still in the water.
Carlos was located after being under water for about an hour. He was taken to South Nassau Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say that at 6 p.m., all swimmers at the beach were ordered out of the water. They say that two men decided to go into the water after lifeguards had left, and ended up getting caught in a strong riptide.
