A seventh grader from Brooklyn is one step closer toward having her artwork on Google's homepage.
Kecia Imani Nelson is a seventh grader at Explore Empower Charter School in Crown Heights. She got quite the surprise today.
She's one step closer to landing her doodle "Black Girl Magic" on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions to see.
"It just represents my school and everything and shows the things that make me feel relaxed," she explains.
The drawing was chosen from thousands of entries Google received this year in its Doodle for Google contest.
A total of 54 winners from across the country were announced Thursday. From that group, five will be chosen as national finalists and one will have their doodle featured on Google's homepage for a day. The national winner also gets a $30,000 college scholarship - something the aspiring artist says would be incredible.
If she wins, her school gets a $50,000 tech package to be used for improvements in its computer lab or technology program. The principal says that money would go right back to the kids.
"Schools are more than just about academics, and as educators our job is to be able to find what is the brilliance in our students. Having a really robust art program and technology program brings out the STEM leaders and the artists of the world, and that's just really important in today's world"
Nelson still has to go up against more than 50 other state and territory winners. Viewers can help Nelson win by voting through the link here that is set to go live at Thursday, May 26 at 3 p.m. until June 3. The final winner will be announced in June and the doodle will be on the Google homepage for the day.
