New York schools are partnering with professional basketball teams to teach kids the fundamentals of basketball and how to apply those in life.
P.S. 1 in Brooklyn got the ball rolling on Wednesday, as some lucky fifth-grade basketball stars joined the launch of the partnership at their school.
The students took part in a free basketball clinic that looks to teach kids the fundamentals of playing basketball and how those skills can be used in their daily lives.
"Maybe one day, I can join the Brooklyn Nets and support my community,” said fifth-grader Jacob Manciole.
Cameron Johnson, the Nets’ newest player who joined the team as a part of the Kevin Durant trade, and New York Liberty player Jonquel Jones joined the Nets and Liberty coaching staffs to cheer the kids on.
“This is a pretty big deal,” said Johnson. “This is a lot of kids' lives that we're able to impact, and we're able to impact in a positive way."
While only a small group of kids took part in the kickoff for the clinic, the team says they hope the program can expand to about 50,000 students at schools across the city.
