Parents gathered for a fourth day outside New York City schools today to protest the city's plan to house asylum seekers in school gyms.
This comes as elected officials are now calling on the federal government to send emergency funding to New York to help with the crisis. They're also calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to open up the rest of the state to ease some of the pressures on New York City.
On Wednesday, New York City Council Member Justin Brannan tweeted that P.S. 188 in Coney Island will no longer be used as a temporary shelter for migrants. It's unclear if the same decision will be made for other schools, but Brannan said, "Our schools should not be used for this purpose.”
P.S. 189 school officials announced Thursday morning they will not be housing migrants. The NYPD has confirmed that it opened up one of its facilities to a small number of asylum seekers.
The NYPD said in a statement, "The department made available limited space within one of its facilities for a short period, to assist the city in dealing with this emergency."
Parents are urging the city to find a more suitable location for the thousands of migrants who continue to arrive.
