Health officials believe the death of a seventh grader in Canarsie is likely linked to an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, putting many Brooklyn parents on alert.

The child, a student at I.S. 211, is the latest child to suffer a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection (MRSA). The student is the first recent case to be found in Brooklyn.

Staff and other students are not at risk for the infection, according to the city Health Department. Medical officials are still advising residents to wash their hands thoroughly and avoid the sharing of drinks and razors.

Authorities say more than 15 student in the metropolitan area have recently been diagnosed with MRSA. Experts consider juvenile deaths from infection to be rare.
