Brooklyn Pride is celebrating 25 years this month with a number of festivities planned for annual Pride Week.
"Brooklyn Pride has shined. We very community oriented, we are very family oriented, and we stand out as being able to have a lot of fun but focusing on families and communities and local but we have made a difference," says Brooklyn Pride co-chair Mickey Heller. "25 years means a lot."
Pride Week, which starts June 7, will includes both in-person and virtual events.
Heller says the week will kick off at 5 p.m. with a rooftop party, a kickoff party on Atlantic Avenue.
On Tuesday, he says there will be a virtual panel which will discuss coping with mental health, stress, and anxiety in the wake of the pandemic.
Heller says a virtual paint and sip is planned for Wednesday.
Ariel Sanders, secretary of Brooklyn Pride, says Thursday will feature a virtual drag Bingo event.
She says an in-person event family movie night is planned for Friday.
Saturday will comprise of a 5k over at Prospect Park followed by a mini festival from 3rd to 5th Street. She says the week will wrap up on Atlantic Avenue in which they will do a display of stores that will have dressed up windows promoting pride.
Despite the celebrations around Pride Week, Heller says celebration keeps going year after year.
"To be able to be consistent to continue to increase and be able to get better every year, we're thankful," Heller says, thanking the volunteers, vendors, everyone who supports Brooklyn Pride.
