Many Brooklyn residents were offended by a cartoon in Wednesday?s New York Post, which depicted two police officers shooting a chimpanzee while one says, ?They?ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.?
Some Brooklyn community advocates, as well as the Rev. Al Sharpton, publicly criticized the cartoon for implying President Barack Obama is the chimpanzee and for its racial undertones.
?It is profoundly racist to depict [President Obama] as a monkey," Councilman Charles Barron says.
In response to Sharpton?s criticism, the New York Post released a statement, which says "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington?s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.?
Barron says he, his wife and Sharpton plan to protest in front of the New York Post?s offices in Manhattan Thursday.
