A Brooklyn school took a break from its regular class schedule to take part in National Black Lives Week of Action.
Sixth-graders at MS 839 are participating in a three-day long virtual teach-in to talk about issues important to Black students.
The virtual panel is moderated by the students and they are asking tough questions.
NYC Outward Bound Schools say they have always been committed to diversity, prioritizing nearly half of its seats to low-income, multilingual learners and students in temporary housing.
The panel discussed how changes, such as mandating Black and ethnic studies, hiring Black teachers and funding counselors instead of officers, would be a step in the direction to level the playing field for students of color.
Organizers say it is important to continue the work and discussions beyond this week of action.
