(AP) - A Brooklyn middle school student has died afterbecoming infected with an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection.The city Health Department says the methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus infection, or M-R-S-A, is the likely cause ofthe death.
The department says there's "no reason to believe that otherchildren or school employees are at increased risk of Staphinfection." The agency says fatal cases of M-R-S-A among childrenare rare.
Such infections gained attention following the death this monthof a Virginia high school senior who was diagnosed with it. Thecity Health Department has proposed mandatory reporting of theillness so it can track the number of cases.
At least six students on Long Island have recently beendiagnosed with M-R-S-A.
