Brooklyn to have fewer officers
Fewer officers are expected to be patrolling Brooklyn after the NYPD announced cutbacks Tuesday.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told a City Council panel that 342 civilian positions will be cut, resulting in uniformed officers picking up the slack on many administrative duties.
"We obviously don't want to reduce any positions," Kelly says. "We prefer not to have to do this, but this is the hand that we've been dealt."
The civilian cutbacks follow plans to eliminate the January 2010 academy class.
