Brooklyn’s Uzbek population condemns Manhattan attack
Local Uzbek community leaders met with Borough President Eric Adams in Sheepshead Bay Wednesday, a day after one of their countrymen allegedly killed eight people in Manhattan and injured others.
Brooklyn is home to one of the largest Uzbek populations in the country, and many transplants say they're disgusted by the actions of the attack suspect.
Among the ideas brainstormed Wednesday is creating Uzbek cultural centers to better integrate into the local community. They also sought ways to prevent young immigrants from being brainwashed into extremism.
Leaders say they want to shine a light on their rich culture, from food to art.
"The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent," Adams says. "Brooklyn is the Tashkent of America."
