Bushwick residents are helping neighbors who were displaced by a fire last week.
The fire broke out in a three-family home on Lawton Street. Residents say that no one was injured, but all of the 10 tenants were displaced.
Robert Murray, a witness to the fire, tells News 12 that friends and local businesses created a GoFundMe page to help the families that had already raised thousands Friday. The group then held a benefit concert at the Gateway in Bushwick Friday night.
"It's unbelievable to see how quickly and how strongly people can get together to help someone in need," he said.
Scott Sweeney, a displaced resident, tells News 12 that it has been very stressful since the fire.
"I feel very fortunate that no one was hurt. I feel amazed at how quickly the fire department responded," he said.
Despite losing his home, Sweeney says that he is grateful and hopeful for a happy ending.
"I'd like to see everybody have a safe place and everybody find a safe and stable place and the house rebuilt," he said.
