Many immigrant tenants say their landlords are neglecting repairs, which will encourage renters to leave so landlords can raise rents. Residents describe Bushwick as an up-and-coming section of Brooklyn, some even call it East Williamsburgh. While they are happy the area is experiencing growth, they do not want it to be due to gentrification.

Immigrant advocates argue that when higher income renters move into traditionally low-income, minority neighborhoods, property taxes increase and homeowners leave.
