Bushwick woman deals with swarm of flies in apartment for a year

She said it all started in the spring of 2024, months after she moved into her Decatur Street apartment. The flies slowed down during winter months and reappeared this past spring. They've only multiplied since.

Flies greet Kris Hanley at her apartment door every day. She says very often they even make their way inside.

"This has been the second year,” said Kris Hanley. “I'm pretty sure I capture at least dozens on my fly traps and everything, and I have to keep buying.”

She said it all started in the spring of 2024, months after she moved into her Decatur Street apartment. The flies slowed down during winter months and reappeared this past spring. They've only multiplied since.

"I was in contact with management a few times,” said Hanley. “I probably sent like 15 tickets throughout the past year."

She also made a 311 complaint in early August – which she said she closed on her own after management told her to and that the issue would be handled.

"They said that the exterminator came,” said Hanley. “That they fixed the issue and everything, but it wasn't fixed. It's affected me to the point where I'm always cleaning now and I'm always hyper vigilant.

She says the lack of urgency has taken a toll on her mental health.

"I think it's just important that the landlords pay attention to their tenants, especially the ones that have lived here and pay rent on time and everything."

She was told another exterminator would be coming to fix the issue on Wednesday.

News12 reached out to management to confirm the appointment but has not yet heard back.
